Concerns about the Commonwealth Bank redevelopment

A long-running issue for our group has been the dilemma of the Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Sturt and Lydiard Streets. In 1967 the Bank demolished the Leonard Terry original building of 1866, replacing it with a modern building which has been an eye-sore to this most important intersection ever since.

In 2005, CBA agreed to 'enhance' the building. We argued for a re-construction of the original facade, as shown in the photo montage. However after a long fight and five days in VCAT, the CBA was given permission to put a very modern facade onto the building. This is a cheap and nasty solution for such an important heritage site.

It is our vision that one day the Leonard Terry original can be reconstructed, bringing this intersection back to its Victroian glory.
